Carbon Sequestration in Rangeland Soils

Sian Mooney, Economics, Boise State University, 1910 University Drive, Boise, IL 83725

Improved soil C management provides many benefits to society; for example carbon sequestration, reduced water and wind erosion, sedimentation, nutrient run off and improved water quality, recreation and wildlife. Many of the services do not have explicit prices, we receive them for free; however, the absence of a market price should not suggest that these services are without value. This presentation will examine whether carbon sequestration in rangeland soils could compete economically in a national market for carbon credits and discuss the reason for pricing differences between the European and US carbon markets.
